If this adage is still true then surely the popularity of NASCAR would've meant greatly increased sales of the Monte Carlo, Taurus, Grand Prix, Intrepid. Sadly, for the manufacturers pumping millions into Winston Cup this is not true.
Since the early 90's when NASCAR wasn't quite as popular as it is now, half of the models races have disappeared, and the four remaining cars have barely managed to maintain their market share, let alone increase their sales. This proves that NASCAR is about the drivers and not the cars anymore, as the race cars no longer bear any relationship to the showroom car, the SUV remain the vehicle of choice:(
