Gordon Offers Apology for Incidents at NHIS

WELCOME, N.C. (Sept. 20, 2004) – The following is a statement by Robby Gordon, driver of the No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet, regarding yesterday's Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway:

"First and foremost, I feel terrible for Jeremy Mayfield, Tony Stewart, their teams, sponsors and car owners Joe Gibbs and Ray Evernham. I allowed my frustration with the 16 car to affect two other teams, both of which have great shots to win a championship, and for that I am sorry. I also want to apologize to Cingular Wireless and everyone at Richard Childress Racing. We had a car capable of winning Sunday, and from my standpoint I was spun intentionally after I made a clean aggressive pass on the 16, and I showed poor judgment in trying to even the score.

“As for the post-race events, I chose not speak with the media given the fact that I had nothing to say other than I'm sorry. One media member made what I felt was a very inappropriate comment to me because I would not answer his question, and he was the target of my gesture, not the media contingent as a whole. That, too, was poor judgment and, in hindsight, I should have just walked away, so I also apologize to any media members and bystanders I offended. It was a bad day that just seemed to get worse and worse."

That seems about right to me. He screwed up and applogized to everyone but Greg Biffle. That works.

One day Robbie will be old and grey headed...only then will he realize just what that one last act cost. I'd guess he cost himself many millions of dollars. I doubt he will ever drive in the big show again. The one chance that drivers hope and pray for was thrown away by his temper. It is a good bet that the blackball will follow him all the days of his life.

I am not a Robby fan but it seems to me that he is taking all the flack. What about Greg Biffle who started the whole mess. He seems to be getting off with no criticism.

Remind me again what Biffle did wrong? I mean the "bug-eyed dummy" is no saint in a lot of the incidents but what was it he did? Robby cut across his nose trying to get ahead of his team mate Harvick and lost control. I've watched the spin several times and there didn't appear to be any damage to his rear until he hit the wall. The paint didn't even look mussed. Is it possible that his actions, his over driving, his attempt to get by a team mate very early in a race was at least partly to blame for his own mishap. Is his lack of patience, which we have all seen over and over since he's been in Cup, a major shortcoming and one where most of the blame could and should be placed. I mean afterall he is not a major player, ala Lil'E, Jeff Gordon, etc., where he should demand or expect any preferential treatment especially given his past actions. Spencer, after all, is not the only one out there who doesn't forget. Sometimes respect has to earned and given to others before it is given to oneself. It would be interesting to know what Sterling was thinking because it did appear that he intentionally drove into Robby when he could more easily have missed him. I think sometimes things go on that we can only begin to guess at...

As much as I like Robby, if you watch the first incident closly you will see Biffle's car dive from braking trying to miss Robby as he cut up in front of him also Biffle cut the wheel and went sideways trying to avoid him. As much as I hate to admit it, Barelypure made some reall good points. And if anyone watched NBS 24/7 tonight you'll know he doesn't have many friends in the Busch Series either. Robby can blame no one but Robby for these problems.

if this had happened 10 years ago it wouldn't be a big deal, tony and mayfail would have handled it between the haulers.

Mayfail......WTF he is in the top 10. Give the guy a thumbs up this year.

Well, it took all of...a few laps for someone not in the Cup race to mess up someone who was. At least Stewart and Mayfield kept their heads about it and appear to be focused on the task at hand.

Maybe the upper ups need to realize that just because someone didn't make the cut doesn't mean that they shouldn't be expected to race...that being said, I think the chasers should run under a different points system or just do away with it...a couple of guys who are in the chase get wrecked as a result of someone who isn't in it and everyone gets their panties in a wad, of course, no one seemed to care about the other drivers who went home with wrecked cars...all this "oh no, its over" when newman blows an engine? C'mon, Brendan gaughan has a lot of blown engines and his job is jeopardy...no one seems to be as fired up about that. This is a crappy double standard on nascar's part...if all they're going to care about is 10-15 drivers, make the field smaller

The more I see of the "playoff" system the more I dislike it. When 2 teams, Stewart and Mayfield, become more important than the teams that are not in the chase then something is wrong with the system. It is wrong to think that only the top 10 are to race and the others just go out there and go "round-and-round" and stay out of the way.

Robby slid up the track in front of Biffle after driving into the turn recklessly and too hard. He was spun whether anybody touched him or not.

They shoulda parked him like they threatened to park Spencer at Richmond. But since one of the Golden Boys wasn't involved at NH, they just let him go with a slap on the wrist.

Robby's day is coming. And when it does, I betcha Childress will see it, unlike his pitiful blathering Sunday. If trapped in an elevator with Childress and Fran Drescher, with only one bullet in the gun, I'd shoot myself.

check the power rankings for biffle, he admitted that he was in the wrong for the first incident.

admitting wrong doing and doing it on purpose is two totally different things.

On a completely side note, and I do not mean to hijack this thread, it is amazing how far this board has come (is that a good thing or a bad thing) in just a few months. It wasn't that long ago when folks on here went absolutely ape that a poster said Tonie instead of Tony. Now de7 throws out Mayfail (which I find absolutely hilarious and wish I had thought of it) and it barely causes a ripple. Either that or a lot of posters haven't seen it yet. Either way... :salute:

But going by screen names, I believe de7 was a Dale Earnhardt fan, I can see why he doesnt like Mayfield, Mayfield was one of the very few to punk Earnhardt in his own game.

I thought it was just a type-o, of course, saying Mayfail is a lot better than saying Willfail or Alwaysfails
I still think he has a good shot, got his bad luck out of the way early...right?

the main reason i don't like him, i lived in nashville when he raced at the fairgrounds, he was a crybaby then and still is. also he dumped his "plain jane wife" for a scanky trophy wife when he got to cup. hell guys look at his record and how many times he has been fired or left by mutual agreement. the guy is a loser IMO
actually Robby G fan i got a little respect for him when he punted dale at pocono, very few had the ba... to attempt that.
