There was talk that the driver's were going to boycott Talledega last year (or the year before, I don't remember). Do you think it would do any good? It would only work if every one of them did it. This is just too dangerous. I would ask if somebody needs to get killed before NASCAR addresses this issue, but someone already has and they still don't change a thing!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! This is not baseball!! Play by the rules or get out of the sport!! Change the rules if you don't like them but don't make the fans suffer!! One big reason I don't follow baseball anymore!!
I've asked myself that question a few times, I think sponsors would throw a fit.
But I don't think any company wants to sponsor a dead driver.
I think they should. This is not racing.

Get the sponsors envolved.........they carry a lot of clout with NASCAR.......don't boycott.........that's the chicken sh** way!! Yeah, it's bad but only the fans suffer if they boycott!!
And it's the "fans" that love to see these kinds of races, so the sponsors aren't going to do anything about it.
Do you hear the huge cheers with each wreck?

I just think it is a shame how this race is going to affect the points race. Tony has really busted his @$$ to get back in the top five in points and only 88 point back. But, this is going to put him WAY back in the points standings again. Not to mention what it is going to do to the 24 and the 48.

I don't understand the mentality that causes people to cheer when someone is wrecked.

I hate plate racing too..........I watched the unrestricted races of old......loved it!! But a boycott isn't going to do anything but hurt the fans!! Drivers can get experts and lawyers to pressure!! Just don't boycott four huge races a year!!

Not really a drift from the thread.......but plate racing techniques do apply for a good driver!! Did you see that move Jeffie put on Jr? Beautifully preformed pass!!:D

Yes, DE that was a very professional move by the 24.
But, what if the FANS start boycotting Plate races???

I'm all for it, but I don't think we could really organize enough people to be effective.

Why not 4X? A website is all we need.......I don't know how to build one but I do know someone who has had one built! We could start a grassroots thing here on Paul's site, if he will let us......move from there!! If not by Oct, then maybe by Feb 2003:)

Big Tracks went from being the best tracks to being the worst tracks. The technology has gone backwards there!! They were driving 185 MPH in 1965 on these tracks!! The cars are way way way too slow !!!! Speed em up and make the drivers have to earn these wins !! Bring back that Cale Yarborough Sling Shot....that was real racing !

I too would join a movement to get rid of "plate" engines. Can't call it racin. I HATE restrictor plates!!!!!!
I was crying most of the last half of that fiasco!!!! I don't feel bad for Jeff, he's a pro and don't blame Mikey and Jr for not 'giving' Jeff the lap back. My heart hurts for Dale J, Tony S. Bobby L, Jeff B. Brett B. Joe Nemechek, and his mom!!!! Oh, God, the look on her face was just awful!!!! All the drivers too many to name that simply put are helpless as lil children out there.
I would gladly join a boycott of restrictor plates. That is NOT racin!!!!!

Something has to be done. Plate racing is ridiculous and very, very dangerous.

The plates are not the problem, niether is slowing them down. They need to get rid of atleast 2 of these plate races, they have 2 road course races so they should only have 2 plate races. Thats is what I would rather see, have 1 Daytona and 1 Dega race.

As long as the fans keep packing the stands at Daytona and 'Dega, the "racing" will go on. I have made my last trip to Daytona. I will not go back. My heart was in my throat every lap last night. This is not racing --- this is Roman gladiators fighting for the entertainment of the masses.

Windsor, please answer this. What if they removed the plates, added weight, messed a little with the aero, and more. Would That help make these races less dangerous??

hey kat,

Instead of restrictor plates to hold down engine power, why not aim to where the power gets to the track. Narrow the tires, then they'd have to back out to get through the turns. They could keep the same basics through out, just make 'em drive with the throttle in the turns. Just maybe an option I thought I'd throw out and see what was thought about it.

The down force has to be reduced. The drivers have cried so much for more downforce the cars drive themselves. They just keep it on the floor and go. The cars have to be made so the drivers lift in the turns to get better races at tona and dega.

Drivers have threatened for years that they would boycott the restrictor plate races. But let's see them try and actually do that. Drivers know they want something changed at these tracks, but they know if they don't go, other drivers will, and that will hurt them in the points. If they want to compete at that level, that's just something they are going to have to do. Cars go fast, things can happen. But you have to feel sorry for the drivers, since they really can't do anything but complain and their leave the safety of their lives in the hands of Nascar. But what is Nascar supposed to do? Elliminate the restrictor plates all together, and have them going at speeds that would be even more dangerous?
4xchampncountin
07-08-2002, 03:06 AM
I really don't think increasing the speeds would make it more dangerous at all. What makes the Plate races so dangerous is the fact that everybody goes almost the exact same speed and sudden moves to avoid danger are virtually impossible.
TRL...I could not agree more with the Gladiator analogy. That is exactly what it seems like. Some so called fans love to see lots of passing and lots of wrecks. That is exactly what they get with these "races". I have a hard time even calling this racing.

I know that Interstate Batteries stated last year that they would support Bobby if he chose not to race.

The reason the wrecks are bigger is because the cars are closer together when the wreck starts - if you do away with the plates, the cars will still be that close together, only going at 215 - 220 instead of 190 or so.
I like the idea someone mentioned of skinny tires to kill the handling - or no spoilers - that'll keep them from holding it on the floor the entire lap.
